Mimo że dziś figuruje jako rodzaj miejscowości (PRNG, BDOT10k), wydaje się, że schronisko turystyczne nie było w interesującym nas okresie uznawane za miejscowość. Świadczy o tym brak wyróżnienia tej kategorii w spisie Bystrzyckiego, jak również sposób prezentacji na mapach: bez nazwy własnej, jedynie sygnatura i skrótem objaśniającym. Pojęciowo kategoria zbliżona do szałasów pasterskich i karczem (patrz przykład).
