Suburb is always (ex definitione) a part of a locality (city, town). In the fortified cities, the area of the core city was limted by the fortifications, especially by the walls. The suburb could have a different degree of legal separation from the city. It is an entity typical rather for the pre-industrial era. Most of the suburbs, especially from the end of the 18th c., were incorporated legally and then functionally as well as morphologically into the city. The particular name of the suburb usually disappeared or obtained a different meaning. It is necessary to distinguish suburbs from the suburban settlements which were largely independent of the neighboring city or even held central functions to it, e.g. due to the location of the seats of the authorities. Such a situation was common during the first stages of cities establishment, especially for larger centers (prince's stronghold and the cathedral outside the main municipality).
