Miasteczko z zasady jest odrębną miejscowością. Na ziemiach polskich nie istniało rozróżnienie formalne między miastem i miasteczkiem, funkcjonowało ono natomiast na niektórych obszarach Rzeszy Niemieckiej (Flecken, Marktsiedlung - Stadt).
