This notion was used to mark localites that lost their city rights after the "January Uprising". The urban settlement could also be used in a broader sense, encompassing all settlement units of urban character, e.g. a big city, suburbs, etc.

Termin był stosowany dla oznaczenia ośrodków, które utraciły prawa miejskie po powstaniu styczniowym. Osada miejska mogła być stosowana także sensie szerszym, obejmującym wszystkie jednostki osadnicze o charakterze miejskim, np. duże miasto, przedmieścia itp.
